another brief interlude

i know, i know - you're all chomping at the bit for alinea review.  fret not!  tonight i got home late because i had dinner at tacos el asador with a new friend, S.  then i came home, did my weights, and got a little spooked in a face off with a raccoon while trying to hustle a yard waste bag to the curb.

anyway, we may not have time for a lengthy review, but we DO have time for another thrilling installment of -

roll call of awesome:

lately, i've been OBSESSED with the look of a traditional, english, chesterfield sofa, preferably in a gleaming black leather. it's so posh! i know i'm generally miss mid-century modern/affordable design, but i feel like there's something about these sofas that still harkens back to great screwball comedies from the 50s, when the intrepid girl reporter would be trading quippy barbs with the clueless gumshoe detective in an office featuring just such a piece.

i know they don't look all that comfortable, but they must be! this velvet version would kind of be a nice middle ground, but it still doesn't look as nice as the leather version, i think:

the other thing i've been festering over is reupholstering a wingback chair:

you can find these chairs for a song on craigslist. there are detailed instructions for reupholstering them online...i feel like i have the drive and werewithal to make it happen - just need an electric staple gun and some needle nose pliers and my keen eye for colour. i REALLY REALLY REALLY want to do this! i feel like i could turn poo into slightly more gilded poo! i'm thinking either a quirky toile, or a traditional upholstery fabric but in a different colour, or maybe a gingham or tiny houndstooth. houndstooth would be ill. or, ideally, a red and black buffalo plaid, but i'm not sure if that's my inner hipster speaking. i just think a wingback chair in red and black buffalo plaid would be dope.

finally, i've found my quilt pattern. i'm going to try my hand at making this bad boy:

isn't it gorgeous? i don't think i have enough fabrics to make mine do the same kind of colour progression but i don't think it needs it. it'll look just fine without the subtle gradation. i'm pumped!!!

yay projects!!!!!

tidying up

before the giant alinea review.

saturday was so much fun! i hung out with H and baby D and M for a good chunk of the day, walking around leslieville and poking into furniture shops and talking about our design aesthetics. i also bought a school desk (like, a desk from an elementary school) for $10! and the guy delivered it to my house! H bought one too and a zippy tray that's quite beautiful and 70s stark. then we went to the park and sat on a blanket and tried to knit. well, i knit and tried to teach. H remembered how to knit. and M gave it a try and by the end of our time there, had pretty much figured it out.

saturday night dinner was fantastic (if i do say so myself.) i untied the rolled up lamb shoulder roast and seasoned it with salt and pepper. then i slathered it all over with a mix of 1/4 c. dijon mustard, fresh rosemary, and garlic all blitzed up by my hand mixer, then roasted it in a 400F for about 30-45 minutes. it was super tasty and flavourful, though a little tough and fatty (that's the shoulder for you.) my fennel and potato gratin came together quite nicely and won rave reviews. i also blanched some green beans and made a shallot-mustard warm vinaigrette to toss them with. i had originally planned on making eton mess for dessert (crisp meringue, layered with fruit and whipped cream) but the humidity of the day foiled my plans and the meringue was a chewy, very uncrispy, tacky mess. i made a strawberry rhubarb crisp instead and served it with vanilla ice cream.

after hanging and laughing with the goosetang clan, on saturday i was very very very brave and very committed to being social and showed up at the birthday "party" of one of my dodgeball teammates. when i arrived, i found the birthday boy in a separate room, adjacent to the main room where the people were (including his gf), wearing a headset and applying himself with zeal and dedication to the online game, world of warcraft (that's WoW for the uninitiated/non-geeky.) he didn't come out the whole time i was there! it was kind of odd, but strangely endearing how committed to the WoW he was/is. i had a slice of cake, stayed for about an hour and then high tailed it outta there.

sunday morning we roused ourselves and picked up some treats from bonjour brioche on our way to waterloo, whereupon we promptly got discombobulated and lost upon entering the city limits. the dotytron would probably have you (and the world at large) believe that this is MY fault for not being able to remember A's directions as soon as i got off the phone with him. i blame the dotytron for not bringing page 2 of the google maps directions OR our ontario road map, which might possibly have come in handy. i'm a pretty visual learner, so i'm most comfortable with maps. gimme a map and i can get you anywhere. i also blame the roadkill beaver we passed on our way into waterloo - the shock from seeing the poor little guy all splayed out on the highway totally messed with BOTH of our senses of direction.

i've said it before and i'll say it again, i LOVE J&A. to the moon! as individuals and as a couple. as a couple their individual awesomeness is compounded to the nth degree. probably the couple we know that's most like us. we can just talk and talk for hours and hours and it's so comfortable and easy i feel like i've known them all my life. they're adorable. there's a hard push from the kdubs front for us to move down there (a giant house for $240,000 makes it not purely for selfish, nonstop hangtimes reasons) and J has obviously put a lot of thought into what our lives would be like there, transplanted, including where i'm going to be buying my cheese! lol! A served us amazing paninis (ancho roasted pepper spread, mozzarella, basil, tomatoes) on his homemade sourdough sandwich bread which rose up tall and lovely and had a great crust and mie - quite the little cook he is!

then we came home and futzed around and i freaked out about the swine flu for about 10 seconds and then our realtor showed up and gave us the rundown on what she does and how to buy a house and came prepared with a very handy booklet of information. i have a really good feeling about her. she's great. it helps that we kind of know her already.

finally, we capped off the night with a GINORMOUS, guilt-wracking, pulse-taking-inducing meal from squareboy and some of 'skins' season 2. the first episode they went to a dubstep party/rave. stuff like that makes me forget temporarily that i hate the uk (temporarily.) then the show shows the chavs in bristol and what it means to be middle class there and it all comes back to me (notwithstanding the whole colonialism thing.)

i would like to add an addendum to my 'adventureland' review - it mostly works for me if i picture the characters as high school students. there's a certain gawky naivété to the kids in the movie that doesn't translate quite so well in such a heightened fashion to post undergrad university students. but i know why the screenwriter had to do it, because if they were high school students the summer and working at the amusement park wouldn't have the same sense of weight and wouldn't be such a symbolic, oppressive cipher. summer in high school is weighty but in a different sense - it's fraught with untold potential and unspoken desires and giddy dalliances.

tonight for dinner we had orecchiete with peas, proscuitto and crème frâiche. very easy and very happy spring...i've put the recipe below. we had it with that antipasto salad that the dotytron is totally enamoured with. the salad had chopped romaine, sliced red onion, sourdough baguette croutons, these little roasted spicy peppers stuffed with feta from sun valley's deli counter, green olive stuffed with feta from the same place, hot genoa salami, sliced provolone, all dressed with a balsamic-red wine vinaigrette.

i promise you alinea tomorrow.

oh gosh!

friday night was a blissful night of gabbing with the house family (the roomie was off call and around for a change!) and eating pizza from danforth pizza house and fried chicken from city fried chicken and then being crippled with remorse afterwards about how there is fat collecting in my arteries.

i seriously needed a night OFF. this weekend is another insanely social one. this morning i'm doing usual saturday morning stuff - going for a run, yoga, grocery shopping, trying to reset the regulator on my bbq, working on the garden, etc. then i'm going to meet H, baby D, and her friend M - we've all started a knitting club together as M really wants to learn how to knit so we're going to meet up on queen east, walk to the purple purl and then either head to my place or withrow park if it's as nice as it claims to be (although from the looks of the weather network it's not going to be as sunny as initially reported) and do some knitting and gabbing.

then tonight i'm going to have the goosetang clan over for dinner to celebrate dr. rei's forthcoming birthday and bwong's just passed one and to see their faces all together which hasn't happened in a while.

tomorrow morning we're getting up early and driving to kdubs to visit J & A who we haven't seen in MONTHS AND MONTHS (it feels like.) it'll be nice to visit them on their home turf for a change, as it always seems like they make the drive to the big smoke. then we're heading back early b/c the dotytron has a paper to write and i have dodgeball to go to, then we're meeting with our realtor in the late afternoon to find out what the heck a realtor does.

fun times!

danforth pizza house has been around for 40 years or something - it's old skool pizza...not quite new york style, not quite true blue naples style...more like italian in toronto style? like a red sauce joint style. like pizza pizza but a billion times better. slightly thinner charred crust with a nice bit of chew and a generous hand with toppings. it's fantastic. for whatever reason, this has been our first time going there - i'm not sure why. laziness, wariness about the dilapidated storefront, me being uncharacteristically bourgeois about my pizza establishments, who knows. the fact is, the place is pretty barebones in the toppings department - no spinach, arugala, or fancy cheeses. but for a $16 basic large pie with two toppings, it's solid. good amount of cheese on that puppy. the guy who makes the pizzas rivals only the guy who works the deli counter at masellis (mr. maselli?) for age/frailness/degree of difficulty hearing. it breaks your heart. we're going to be supporting them from now on for all our local pizza needs - we don't know how long they're going to be around for!

then we decided to make the gluttony complete by hitting city fried chicken at the same time. oy vey! you can see where the guilt was coming from/in!

so we've been practicing our performance kiss for the performance. oy vey again! the dotytron says it should last to a count of three...but that just seems unnatural to me. i like the quick kiss OR a full blown make out session (i live my life in extremes) - but this is somewhere in the middle and well, it kinda makes me feel awkward. hopefully we get it down by august but right now we have differing opinions about how it should go down. lol!

in other news...i found THE BEST old skool jungle mix online...two parts, each 30 minutes so it must be copied from a tape, but the sound quality is amazing and the tunes are all the tunes you want to hear. last night as we were driving to pick up a propane tank from home depot, we heard "under mi sensi" (the jungle version) and it gets to the 2:45 mark when the amens drop and it's like instinct - my right hand pops up with the gunshot daps. lol! it's the hypest shiz around - i've never heard another form of music that immediately makes me so blitzed and makes me feel good and makes me want to dance and makes my heart want to jump out of my chest. i was telling the dotytron that when/if i get knocked and go into labour, i kinda of want to have the soundtrack be an 8 hour jungle mix - with ragga jungle during the most intense times. it gets me so PUMPED! i think our midwife/doctor is going to be all weirded out - most people choose calming music, but i don't really get that. it's NOT calm! i want the adrenaline pulsing. we'll see how that goes. maybe i'll hire a dj and get caddy cad to mc my delivery. lol.

okay it's 8:30 and the day is running away from me. gotta flash!

adventureland

is the definition of winsome.  the "from the director of 'superbad'" tagline is doing it a major disservice, if you go in, as my friend N did (we talked about it today and he didn't like it) expecting a blue, raucous comedy with side-splitting laughter.

what you get instead is a fantastic gem of a coming of age, post-university, self-discovery flick that unfolds over the most portentous of youthful seasons, summer. the summer that stretches long and practically reverberates with as-yet-to-be-discovered potential when you're a teenager suddenly turns on you when you're finished university, yawning before you and encapsulating the entire rest of your life in its bottomless depths. jesse eisenberg does a great job of portraying the stuttery, nervous, teetering-on-the-edge-of-cynicism protagonist, who still has enough romantic in him to believe that he can have what he wants (columbia journalism degree) but has been burned enough from wearing his liberal arts education on his sleeve to not quite trust his own sensitive, nice guy allure.

i loved the soundtrack - it was a spot on reference of 80s cool without devolving into pastiche (no 99 luftballoons here!) i loved the way the movie was filmed, kind of gritty and without flash and sparkle, the way you remember those insignificant but portentous defining moments of your own youth when glazed with nostalgia. the camera catches the summer light just so, and the magic hour between dusk when conversations flow limpidly from one tangent to another is rendered in perfect hazy shades of midnight blue. it felt really real and you could get lost in the stories and the characters - you could feel/remember the burning thrill of furtive summer make out sessions in the back of a car, the scenes flush with tenderness even as the air turns thick with desire.

the pacing was great, the performances were well-acted and believable overall - even though kristen stewart seems to only be capable of playing one role, it's one she does well. i thought the only off moments were in the kristen wiig and bill hader roles...it almost seemed like they thought they were in a different movie. it was a little too much of a caricature and i say this even as i find kristen wiig super funny the rest of the time (hader is hit or miss with me.) i thought the film had enough funny moments without those two kind of over-playing their hand.

the film showed a deft hand for human relationships and realistic moments. i really enjoyed it and i highly recommended. in my film notebook, it gets a star in the margins.

i initiated D in her first chipotle burrito experience. it was tasty! i wish i lived closer or the AMC food court wasn't SO packed with good stuff so that my dinner options aren't always so divided. everything in that food court looks really appetizing and fresh. K and J make lovely movie company as always.

tonight was the first thursday night dodgeball game of the season. for some reason, my team signed up for the rec league and we demolished our opponents 23-3. i think they wanted to play rec so we could play against this other team that my team seems to be all weirdly buddy-buddy with. i find it kind of odd. i mean, i don't mind making friends with other teams, but playing rec when we should be intermediate just so we can play people on a team that we ALREADY play against on sundays seems wack.

another wack thing is that originally we weren't going to play this other team at all and then this dude on the other team emailed the league so that we could play against each other, which meant shifting the gym location so that it's way the hell up in east york and now MY team is talking about getting a zip car to get there (it turns out it's actually pretty accessible by bus, if you live on the east side, as i do.) but i'm like, guys...that's totally wack! i would NEVER care enough about another team to re-jig the schedule and make it MORE inconvenient and necessitate RENTING a car just to play against people we already play against. i'm a little pissed off at it. if it hadn't have worked out that i can get there easy by bus i totally wasn't going to throw in on a zip car and i would've bailed entirely.

i'm not really into unilateral team decisions being made without consultation - especially when those unilateral decisions are made for stupid reasons (because some people really want to play against another team - THAT WE ALREADY FACE OFF AGAINST ON A DIFFERENT NIGHT!) and they inconvenience people and mean we have to spend more money. that's kind of ghey, imo.

anyway, i ended up eating leftover indian food at work.

chicago day 3

first things first, i got the 'entertainment weekly' summer movie preview and it consumed me. it's one of my little seasonal rituals. i get the movie preview issues (they do fall, winter, spring, summer), then sit down and methodically go through them, month by month, circling the ones that i want to see based on the descriptions/buzz/cast/director/subject matter, etc. then i put these circled titles into my notebook of films. when i see the films, they get crossed out with a line through the middle of the title. if i love the film, there's a star in the margins so i know that i'd someday like to own it.

it's a neat, tidy, efficient little system and i LOVE the act of doing it.

tonight for dinner i made this pasta with fried eggplant cubes, grape tomatoes, basil and olives. alongside i made my antipasto salad which is basically iceberg lettuce, romaine, roasted peppers, tomatoes, red onion, salami, and provolone all dressed with a very vinegary red wine vinaigrette. you could also add olives, cucumbers, hot italian peppers, mushrooms...basically just plus it up however you wish but use as your guideline things that would normally appear on an antipasto platter.

okay, day 3 of chicago times.

sunday was our "free" day, meaning we didn't have much planned by way of itinerary. we decided to check out oak park, which is the suburb of chicago where the majority of frank lloyd wright-designed houses are clustered. he also did the unity church. getting to oak park necessitated a 45 minute subway ride. that was fine, the neighbourhood is hella affluent and suburban to the extreme, in that tony, monied way. like, the kind of way where apparently people who own the frank lloyd wright-designed houses get all panty-knotted about the fact that their houses are tourist attractions and there are people walking around stopping in front of their yards - newsflash: you BOUGHT A FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT HOUSE. what did you THINK was going to happen? sheesh. talk about entitled.

naturally, we got pwned by our lack of foresight and the dotytron's tour antipathy from seeing the inside of flw's home and studio. so we tooled around and gawked at the GINORMOUS houses and took some shots of us with flw's bust (the vacant eyes were a bad call on the part of the sculptor - he looks like some generic early 20th century british illustration of a wacky, well-to-do eccentric à la dr. doolittle).

the dotytron's leg was hurting him like crazy that day, so we decided to pack up ship and go for lunch. the plan was to go to this mexican place that was a little closer to chicago downtown, but still definitely not on the beaten path (it was in humboldt park) - requiring getting back on the subway and stopping somewhere between oak park and the loop. the place was called cemitas puebla and was famous for making cemitas - mexican sandwiches served on a sesame flecked bread, that i'd never even heard of before, and seemed like something i would only get in mexico or in chicago.

i called the place up and he told me what the closest subway station was. we cross referenced on the map and got off at the stop. we passed the conservatory, which is listed as an "off the beaten path" tourist site. and then we started walking. and walking. and walking. we walked for 20 minutes and found ourselves in the thick of a down-at-heel african american neighbourhood. i describe it as kind of like 'boyz n the hood' but not quite as nice. every house had a padlocked iron fence between it and the sidewalk. people were drinking malk liquor at noon, hanging out. some of the houses were boarded up and needless to say, the dotytron and i stuck out like sore thumbs. we were openly being gawked at. there were also signs in some of the house windows that said stuff like: "stop the shooting! no more innocent victims!" with other signs expressing a similar sentiment plastered on the street light poles.

i stopped and asked directions from some kids who gave me the wary up and down look and we were told that it was "back thataways" - so we walked for another 15 minutes (did i mention that the dotytron was limping like the hunchback of notre dame?) deeper and deeper into this neighbourhood, not recognizing a single street sign. finally, we came to a major artery and hopped on the first bus, abandoning the mission.

it wasn't that i felt unsafe per se. it's not like i thought we were going to get capped in the middle of the day. it was more because we stuck out so badly - there was no way we could be anonymous and it was a terribly discomfiting experience. i felt othered in a way i haven't in a long, long time. i wasn't going in there as the benevolent liberal, the hilary swank character in 'freedom writers' - i felt like a trespasser and interloper. maybe it was all in my head, it probably was...but walking in that neighbourhood i felt the full weight of my privileged subject position and my complete inability to navigate the social relations - i was a tourist with a capital T. and i mean, i'm reasonably aware of my own tourism. i'm not one of those people who goes on trips and pats myself on the back about how i avoided the "tourist traps" or looks down my nose at "touristy" things and tries to act like i'm one of the "natives." i know i'm a tourist. i can't be anything BUT a tourist. this experience kind of crystallized all that awareness and brought it forward in such sharp relief that i couldn't sublimate it.

by this point, we were famished, so we went to wiener's circle for cheese fries and chicago style hot dogs. i love a good steamed vienna red hot. i loved steamed buns. they can be pretty mean to the custies there, but they were nice to me because i was unfailingly polite. i got a double cheddar chardog and a double steamed dog. they were amazingly good, though next time i think i won't get the cheddar fries because they are transcendently good for all of 2 minutes and then the cheese hardens and turns stubborn and recalcitrant the way only processed cheese can.

as we were debriefing over our experience in the ghetto, the dotytron brought up this quote from paolo friere that made us BOTH start tearing up. it's something along the lines of this: hope is an ontological need. hopelessness is not the inverse of hope, it is hope that has lost its way. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so amazing.

as we wandered home, we passed an anthropologie and i applied myself to the sale rack with prodigious industry while the dotyron snoozed on a lemon-coloured sofa.

then we went to garrett's popcorn shop (in business since 1949) and grabbed cheese popcorn (the best cheese popcorn i've ever had...the tangy, sharp, salty cheese flavour perfectly coats each spongy piece...not like the smart food dust that gets in your nose) and caramel corn and went to millenium park where we beheld the glory of the gehry designed amphitheatre and took a million pictures of the bean. the bean is a magical thing. apparently when it was first unveiled, or when chicagoans first saw an unfinished version of the bean, they were in an uproar. now they love it, as they should. it's hypnotic, enticing, fun, playful, engaging - all the things that public art should be.

i'll probably end the chicago chronicles with the alinea recap, so i'll talk about what we did on our last day. we were supposed to go on the segway tour, but it happens rain or shine and we were already feeling a little trepidatious because of the fact that the weather thus far had only deigned to oscillate between a bracing chill and bone-numbing cold. when the day of the segway tour dawned overcast and cloaked in a wet, miserable, dense rain, we called an audible and bailed.

we had breakfast at the bongo room, where i had the pretzel studded pancakes (a reasonable portion) with caramel and white chocolate cream and a side order of sausage and the dotytron ordered the breakfast burrito with chipotle cream.

then we went back to our hotel and bowled a game in the bowling alley in our hotel, which apparently doubles as a club and a bowling alley for the rich and famous, as evidenced by the framed pictures of lance bass and puffy bowling there.  we separated and i returned some of my anthropologie spoils and the dotytron went to this famous jazz record store called the jazz record mart, whereupon he happily gorged on the riches of a store devoted entirely to jazz and blues. we gathered our bags, hopped on a plane (the ricketiest plane EVER - i could feel the refueling guy screwing the gas cap on from my seat!) and came home.

it was a fantastic time filled with adventure and fun. i'd love to go back. i still think new york is MORE fun, but chicago is a great city for a weekend jaunt.

tomorrow i'm going to see 'adventureland' with D at my beloved AMC theatre. K and J are going that night too and we might end up at the same show. the real question is: what to eat? chipotle's? milo's falafels? harvey's??? I LOVE THE AMC!

catching up

chicago part 4 and the standalone, highly anticipated alinea review will have to wait, i've got some weekend catching up to do.

first here are some pics of the niece and nephew being very cute:

saturday, i was pretty busy futzing around. i made a loaf of semolina sandwich bread, using regular yeast, not sourdough. i was inspired by the spectacular rise and mie of the specimen found here. mine wasn't nearly so impressive, although it was wonderful feeling the dough transform from a coarse, ropey mass to the smooth, elastic ball that yielded this after the second rise:

semolina flour is much coarser than regular flour...you can feel each grain, like fine sand. i was skeptical that it would come together and form a smooth dough, but did it ever! i'm not sure why i didn't get the same airy height as the one in the recipe linked above...maybe i should have let it rise longer before baking? this is the finished product:

i don't have a picture of the mie, but it was just slightly tighter than the one from the fresh loaf. the bread is a very utilitarian affair - because of the saffron colour of the interior, you're almost expecting a sweet, challah-like egg bread, but it's much more savoury. not much taste in and of itself, i can see why it's touted as a sandwich loaf - it's very sturdy and would let the sandwich fillings shine.

saturday night we had the dotytron's mater and pater and sister over for dinner. i did a ham, glazed with ginger-pear jam:

isn't she a beaut?

i served her with champ (mashed yukon gold potatoes with scallions that i've slowly poached in butter and cream) and roasted asparagus. the theme of the meal was "spring awakening" aka make-up easter because we were in chicago and didn't get to do easter dinnie with the dotytron clan.

for dessert i made pavlovas, except maybe they weren't pavlovas because i didn't make them chewy/marshmallowy on the inside - basically cooked the meringues straight through so that they were pretty crispy. then i put in lemon curd, a blackberry compote, and topped it with whipped cream.

even though i went to the trouble of straightening my hair and everyt'ing, by the time the familia dotytron had left, it was too late to go and party with my dodgeball peeps when i only wanted to stay an hour or so (a general yardstick i use is that it shouldn't take twice as long to get to and from the place as you're planning on staying at the event in question.) so i got some face time with the dotytron which was for the best, because the next morning i had 10am brunch plans with my friends L and N - i biked 10 km to get to liberty village (newsflash: just because you call it "liberty village" doesn't make it cozy or nice!) to eat at school bakery and café.

the school theme is a little obnoxious. there are ubiquitous chalkboards, institutional clocks all set to the wrong time, your bill arrives in the form of a "report card" and there are apples on every table. it's too much. the kicker is the fact that the female waitstaff wear school girl uniforms consisting of tight black t-shirts and pleated black microminis. i'm sorry, but i'm not into seeing my server's business first thing in the morning when i'm thinking about how i want my eggs done. this isn't hooters!

i ordered the chipotle breakfast sandwich, which was ham, egg, and cheddar in a cheddar biscuit, served with sweet potato and regular potato homefries which were soggy and were particularly galling after our brief sojourn in the u.s. of a, where i got a graduate education in proper homefries. the biscuit was nice and tender...but all in all, it was ham and egg in a freakin' biscuit. i think i'm kind of over going out for brunch - there just aren't enough places in toronto that can do it better than me. i mean, if i was the kind of person inclined to make cereal for sunday breakkie, so my choices were cereal or eggs benny, then fine. but i go all out for sunday breakkie, so paying for stuff that's of equal or lesser value (much less LINING UP FOR IT if i have the temerity to go out for food past 10:30am on a sunday morning) fails the cost benefit analysis.

after going to school, i met up with dr. rei and chatted it up at their place with the hanbo and dropped off some of my precious tres leches cargo. then i played dodgeball and then came home. it was jam-packed!

for dinner last night we ordered from city fried chicken up the street. the chicken was straight out of the fryer...it's just simply dredged in some kind of seasoned flour, so it actually tastes lighter than popeye's full-battered goodness. it was quite nice and very affordable and convenient for being up the street - a nice alternative when we don't want to wait 45 minutes for popeye's delivery. we wanted a salad alongside so we ordered something from magic oven. NEVER AGAIN! i called and asked how big the large salad (priced at SEVENTEEN dollars) was. it was supposed to feature "mixed greens, mixed grilled vegetables, goat's cheese, balsamic vinaigrette." i was assured that it would easily feed 3-4 people. the thing came in one of those cardboard takeout containers that are the size of a like, a regular spiral bound notebook - 6"x8" and it was DISGUSTING. the grilled vegetables were slimey and tasted like they had been cooked aeons ago, and the otherwise we were paying for chopped up romaine and a sprinkling of goat's cheese. I HATE MAGIC OVEN. i know they've roused my ire before but this is IT. they are henceforth dead to me.

for our sunday night dessert i layered up the elements from the pavlova the night before in a glass - i think i actually like it better this way...something about the way the flavours meld makes it tastier

tonight for dinner i made eggplant bharta and green beans thoren and steamed some brown rice. i bought saag and some naan from makkah up the street:

chicago part 3

but first, my day with the chilluns yesterday was so fun and very untaxing and stress-free. they actually went down for a TWO HOUR nap! i had to rouse them because they were sleeping so long, which is a bit of a feat because little miss is notorious for resisting napping. the key is to really tire them out beforehand. first i gave them both haircuts and then i packed us up some healthy lunches and snacks (peanut butter sandwiches cut into start shapes, a banana, an apple, water) and we took the subway and then the bus to riverdale farm. we were originally going to go to the science centre and friend H and baby D were going to accompany us, but they've been felled by a little cold and the science centre seemed a little buckshot on my own.

so little miss was terrified by the animals and the little sir was completely enthralled and they ate their healthy snacks and we shared some cookies baked by the farm and then on our way home we stopped at the park and they played for another hour and then we walked home. on the way there, i had let little miss hold the ttc child's tickets and on the way back, i gave them to the little sir. he was SUPER STRESSED about it. i put them in his pocked and then i noticed his little wee hand poked into his pocket, feeling for the tickets and he was kind of tense. he stayed that way until he gave them to the ttc bus driver! lol! so cute!

then i put them in the roomie's bed and made the room really dark and blocked them in and removed distractions and they conked out. s-dawg came over, we ate dinner and shared some cupcakes and then watched treehouse until my mum came to pick them up. it was super fun and very easy going - the older they get the easier they are to handle.

s-dawg also insisted on making me watch this video that he had posted on my facebook wall and i had ignored (i'm the worst for clicking links to stuff sent by other people). people, i eat my recalcitrant link-clicking ways. this is the second coming of christian the lion AND it features my favorite les miz song and it's so perfect that of COURSE i was tearing up:

i can't embed it, you'll have to click through. AMAZING. so so so good. this is totally the kind of human interest story that people need in this time of recession and totally kicks the pants of like, sanjaya and clay aiken or whatever crap north american barfs up. BEST! BEST EVER! 25 MILLION views! another blow struck on the sincerity come back trail.

okay, chicago times.

i forgot to mention that on day 2, while lugging our 10lb tres leches cake around (they're heavy because of all the milk they're soaked in), with the dotytron in an increasingly heightened state of anxiety over the structural integrity of the tres leches, we walked through a bit of pilsen (initially in an attempt to find MORE tres leches!) and hit al's no. 1 italian beef sandwiches - which are supposed to be chicago's answer to the philly cheeseteak, even though the two couldn't be more dissimilar. the chicago beef sandwich has more in common with a florentine bollito sandwich. the meat is clearly sliced paper-thin, then braised to a dissolving tenderness and then piled into a very soft, tissue-textured bun (that you can request "dipped" or not dipped - judging by the pictorial evidence above, we clearly picked "dipped".) we requested hot peppers, to the beef was liberally sprinkled with chili flakes and what looked like bits and pieces from the braising liquid - celery, onions and the like, that were just barely holding their form. it's a messy, undignified affair to eat, but an utterly transporting experience on the palate, the french dip you always wanted but never had.

the major factor that made us abort the secondary tres leches pit stop and go for beef sandwiches instead is that we ended up in a bit of a rough neighbourhood - which is fine, no biggie, ordinarily. and it wasn't even THAT rough...just a little coarse. however, we passed a demo'd lot between two buildings that rank of feces - human. and there was a car on blocks covered with a tarp and the only conclusion that you could come to was that someone was using that as their domicile and lavatory and it kind of made us decide that we should cherish our one tres leches cake and just have a snack somewhere else instead (the dotytron's leg was also hurting - remember the explanatory note that began the chicago chronicles.)

then we went back to the hotel, rested, hit publican and then hit this jazz club, the green mill, which had been owned by al capone way back in the day and was way up north in the suburbs of chicago. chicago is mostly known as a blues town, a jazz town, and a town of libertarian, neo-classical economics. we obviously had to hit a jazz bar at one point. the green mill was kind of awesome, especially for someone who isn't naturally inclined to love jazz and has been gradually brought over by osmosis. it was LIVE in there. we showed up at minute because they have a band that places from midnight until FIVE AM for a $5 cover. amazing! the dotytron chose wisely because the band had a hammond b-3 player - one of the factors that will make me more inclined to like whatever jazz happens to be on is the presence of hammond, wurlitzers and rhodes - i'm more of a rhythm section fan at the best of times and generally tune out the saxophones and trumpets.

another factor that makes me like live jazz is if the show is LIVE. i'm used to ENERGY at shows - the dotytron's constant criticism is that i want things to be too boombastic when we go out and hear live music. jazz shows in toronto featuring the most boringly middle-class, aged, restrained, and fogey audiences i've ever seen everywhere. it's VERY off-putting. people don't talk, but sit in silent reverence and then unleash a scattered pitter-patter of polite clapping. it's egregious. this music was supposed to be COOKING! the thing about the green mill was that it was like a rowdy, raucous bar with people listening to tunes. the late night band was more of a be-bop thing (i think) and there was a great energy in the room. the same thing in new york. when we caught this jazz legend, ron carter, at the museum of natural history. it was still a museum audience, but A - there was WAY more ethnic diversity in the crowd, and B) even though it was still museum town, the audience was still more lively and engaged (purely subjective, but my powers of perception are unparalleled.)

and so ended day 2, with a sleepy cab ride back to our hotel, which apparently turns into a nightclub at some point, completely with skanky chick hostesses tottering on stilettoes in the lobby.

day 3 will have to be a separate post and the rundown on alinea will get it's own self contained review.

today i was supposed to go to the inaugural meeting of my knitting club, which consists of friend H, baby D (by proxy), friend M, and H's other friend M, a dude who's interested in sock knitting, but H and baby D, as previously mentioned, are sick so that go kiboshed. it's supposed to be a bit rainy, too. we're having the dotytron's parents and his sister over for dinner tonight so i'm going to do some prep for that, do some knitting, and my exercises and do the grocery shopping. i have a billion photos i should be putting in albums but i ordered the albums to my sister's house so i'll probably just organize my recipes and do some general, mild tidying and dinner preparing.

there's a party at my dodgeball peeps' house tonight - a little mixer to celebrate the upcoming season - i might stop by for a bit after dinner with the parental units and be sociable.

another interruption

to the chicago recap...for a brief installment of

roll call of awesome:

this is roll call of awesome: home edition because i'm in some kind of weird nesting/home improvement/decorating/spring cleaning phase - probably inspired by the fact that the roomie found an apartment and will be out of here in june.

vintage cake plates with domed lids! (i'm bidding on one on ebay)

vintage bread boxes for storing the homemade bread i'm going to be more diligent about making! isn't it lovely?

i'm also bidding on vintage tea towels so that i can make bread bags, which was the preferred method of storing bread (back in ye olden days) and which is infinitely more aesthetically appealing than my current ziploc bag method.

this is a bread bag:
see? isn't it just so dear and little house on the prairie-ish?

industrial storage cabinet. i came across this on my travels and nearly knocked over everything on my desk in my haste to call the company to see if i could buy it. alas, it was already sold! drat drat drat! it's so prison-chic! i effin' love this piece and could picture it filled with jams and jellies and my other knick knacks. blast!!! ah well, in the world of craigslist furniture finds - there's always something else waiting around the corner.

the woodland organic sheets from pottery barn:

perfect for summer.

and finally, a tauntaun sleeping bag:

sooooooooo awesome.

tonight we had leftovers. last night we had vegan shepherd's pie, leftover from the last time i made vegan shepherd's pie and had enough extra to freeze a casserole dish of the stuff.

on monday night we had spinach, roasted pepper, tomato-basil sauce, roasted garlic, and mozzarella calzones - brushed with chili oil when they came out of the oven (i didn't make the crust) and sprinkled with sea salt with more tomato basil sauce for dipping.

tomorrow is my day off. i'm doing my running and errands in the morning and then my mum is dropping off my niece and nephew and i'm going to take them to riverdale farm and the park and then cut their hair. then s-dawg is coming over and we're eating kraft dinner and hot dogs and popcorn and i'm going to make banana split sundaes with tonnes of sprinkles and candy (hey, i'm allowed to be spoiler-aunt 3000.)

fun!
